Chitré is the capital or district head of the Panamanian province of Herrera. It is located in the northeastern part of the Azuero peninsula and counts, according to data from the 2010 census, with 9 092 inhabitants, occupying the thirteenth place among the most populated municipalities of Panama and the first of the Azuero Peninsula. In the district counts on a population of 50,684 and meter of 80,096 approximately.
It is known as "The city that grows alone" and "" The city where no one is a stranger. "The homonymous district is divided into five corregimientos: San Juan Bautista, Llano Bonito, Monagrillo, La Arena and Chitré (corregimiento cabecera). Connected with the Pan American highway in the town of Divisa by the National avenue, main axis of communication of the province of Herrera and Los Santos.
It preserves in its old town a historical complex composed of houses, churches, squares, avenues and parks, next to an important museum heritage. Between the cultural events that are celebrated they emphasize the Holy Week of Chitré, the celebrations of the patron saint, San Juan Bautista, and the Carnival.
